Over 30% of Oxygen Plants Under PM Cares in Bihar Facing Issues: Report

PSA oxygen plants are a critical component of the healthcare infrastructure of many countries, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. PSA stands for Pressure Swing Adsorption, which is a process for separating gases from mixtures based on the ability of different gases to be adsorbed onto a solid surface under pressure. PSA oxygen plants are used to produce high-purity oxygen gas (usually 93% purity) from air, which can be used for medical purposes such as respiratory support for patients with COVID-19.

In Bihar, India, the government has commissioned a total of 127 PSA oxygen plants under the PM Cares fund to address the shortage of medical oxygen in the state. However, a recent audit by the state health department has revealed that 44 of these plants are non-functional, which is a cause for concern.

The planned capacity of the PSA plants commissioned in Bihar ranges from 10m3/h to 60m3/h, with a total capacity of 5,240 cubic meters per hour. However, according to the audit, only 75 of the 119 commissioned plants were functional, with the remaining 44 facing teething problems such as low oxygen purity, low flow rate, and faulty components.

The non-functional plants are being inspected and repaired by the state health department, with the support of the manufacturers and suppliers of the plants. The government has also directed the manufacturers to ensure that the remaining plants are commissioned in a time-bound manner to meet the demand for medical oxygen in the state.

PSA oxygen plants are an essential component of the healthcare infrastructure, and it is important to ensure that they are functioning properly to address the shortage of medical oxygen during the ongoing pandemic. The government and manufacturers must work together to ensure that the commissioned plants are functional and can cater to the needs of the patients.

In conclusion, the audit of the PSA oxygen plants in Bihar has revealed that 1/3rd of the plants are non-functional, which is a cause for concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. The manufacturers and government must work together to ensure that the commissioned plants are functional and meet the demand for medical oxygen in the state.
